Pacing for a PB: the negative split

The fastest way to a personal best isn't going harder — it's going smarter.

The best Hyrox races are close to even, or even slightly negative — the second half as fast as the first. Almost every first race is the opposite: a hot start and a painful death march.

Decide your goal finish time, work out the average pace it needs, then run the first two runs deliberately slower than that average. It'll feel too easy — good. You're banking energy for the back half when everyone around you is falling apart. From station five onward, if you paced right, you start passing people. That's how PBs are made.

In Apex improver mode your sessions carry target splits, so 'controlled early, empty late' becomes automatic by race day.
